As a Houston garden engagement photographer, some of my favorite sessions are the ones that feel less like a photoshoot and more like a slow, golden hour walk through somewhere beautiful. Alana and Luke’s engagement session was exactly that: an editorial garden evening in Houston, full of soft light, deep greens, and the easy kind of chemistry you can’t pose for.
I love a colorful, film-forward look, so I brought both film and digital cameras to Mercer Botanic Gardens and let the light do the work. Golden Hour at Mercer Botanic Gardens
There’s a reason Mercer Botanic Gardens is one of my favorite spots as a Houston garden engagement photographer. Winding brick paths, towering trees, tucked-away fountains, and that dreamy filtered light make it feel like a private garden built for two. We moved slowly through the grounds, from the tree-lined walkways to the rose garden to a quiet bench by the water, and every corner gave us something new.
There’s a composed, polished quality to the way Alana and Luke carry themselves, and it’s exactly what gives these frames their editorial edge. Clean lines, still and considered poses, a quiet kind of poise that photographs like a fashion campaign. Editorial doesn’t come from big theatrics, it comes from restraint, and this session leaned all the way into that refined, elevated stillness.
Film & Digital, Side by Side
Shooting both film and digital during a session like this is one of my favorite ways to tell the full story. The digital frames are crisp and colorful; the film frames are soft, warm, and a little timeless. Together they capture both how the evening looked and how it felt.
